![]() ![]() Han’s leisurely paced, somewhat somber narrative revisits several beach-house summers in flashback through the eyes of now 15-year-old Isabel, known to all as Belly.īelly measures her growing self by these summers and by her lifelong relationship with the older boys, her brother and her mother’s best friend’s two sons. The author doesn’t shy away from the difficulties, but there’s humor here, too. They’ll feel for these two very realistically drawn girls and hope for the best along with them. The very satisfying ending-Dolphin connects with the father she’s never seen and maybe, after hospitalization, Mum will get better-is pat, but readers won’t care. A particularly bizarre behavior by Mum forces Dolphin, buoyed by a newfound, supportive friendship with a classmate who’s also an outsider, to take drastic action. When Star’s father invites the girls to live with him, only his own daughter accepts, and Dolphin must make things work at home. More often than not, they’ve had to care for her, and they strive mightily to make allowances and appear normal. Beautiful, odd, and very tattooed Marigold loves her two daughters, ten-year-old Dolphin and 12-year-old Star-progeny of two different brief relationships-but can barely take care of them responsibly. Wilson admirably keeps things upbeat as she explores two sisters’ coping with a mother who is careening further into mental illness and alcoholism. ![]()

Should they continue to seek their own personal happiness, ignoring what is going on around them? Should they deliberately exploit the situation in order to profit from it themselves? Or should they band together out of a sense of obligation to the community to do whatever is necessary to fight the plague? As the plague rages on, at its peak taking hundreds of victims every week, each of the major characters has his own unique approach to the situation. Whatever the plague signifies, the various characters must face up to the situation and decide what their attitude to it will be. The plague may also be understood as the presence of moral evil or simply as a symbol of the nature of the human condition. But the novel has more than one level of meaning. Early readers were quick to note that it was in part an allegory of the German occupation of France from 1940 to 1944, which cut France off from the outside world, just as in the novel the town of Oran must close its gates to isolate the plague. The Plague was first published in France in 1948, three years after the end of World War II. Once they do become aware of it, they must decide what measures they will take to fight the deadly disease. When the plague first arrives, the residents are slow to recognize the mortal danger they are in. Albert Camus's novel The Plague is about an epidemic of bubonic plague that takes place in the Algerian port city of Oran. ![]() ![]() He definitely holds his own again Helen especially she is the one that starts these tricks. You see at the beginning why Helen holds such an animosity toward Hethe.
